Chinese rugs were popularly manufactured in all eighteen provinces of China, including the borderland between the Great Wall and Mongolia. And they are distinguished by their peculiar but otherwise, intricate and beautiful patterns. Most of these Chinese rugs feature past dynasties and emperors, as well as common folklore, seeing as they were the common art topics of the period. However, the Chinese had not only restricted themselves to this standard. In designing rugs, they also made use of a few colors, sometimes only two, making their rugs less flamboyant than other countries. Despite this though, Chinese rugs were still able to impress spectators with a uniquely delightful aura by simply utilizing blue hues against a yellowish-gray background. Now the common application of this particular color in Chinese rugs is owed to the fact that the indigo plant, which is used to derive a variety of blue shades, from the palest to the darkest kind, is widely seen and grown in the country.

Incorporating multiple influences, experts today find some difficulty in separating certain Chinese rugs from those of Eastern Turkestan. This is caused by the fact that some rugs, completely Chinese in character, were recorded to be woven in Eastern Turkestan. And at the same time, rugs suggesting Eastern Turkestan influence, were found to be made in China proper, or in Manchuria. But regardless of where they were made, the Chinese’ eye for detail cannot be mistaken for any other. Hence, Chinese rugs should be seen beyond their origin and appreciated more as a work of art, rather than a home furnishing or technical achievement.
