It is a common term in the industry to call a rug antique if it is over a century old. But age is not the only basis for discerning whether a piece of floor decoration is genuinely antiquated. Most antique rugs feature qualities that are paramount to their estimated time of creation. For example, those that were created during the early centuries would most likely convey simple shape designs and patterns as animal and human figures were popularized more or less during the 1900’s. But, regardless of where and when they were made, most antique rugs are observably colored using plant, animal or mineral-derived dyes; although some are also tinted with synthetic dyes, since these were created in the 1870s. However, rug collectors and fanatics know better than to buy synthetically colored rugs since it is a given that natural dyes tend to make rugs last longer and look more admirable as they age.
Generally, antique rugs catch a higher price in the market because of their commemorative value. But rugs that are less than a century old, are still considered very valuable, depending on how well they are made and preserved. Semi antique and modern rugs can also boast of quality craftsmanship and material, matching that of older rugs. However, nothing still compares to the pureness of antique rugs, as they were not made purely for the sake of retail. Before, rug weaving was a medium for expressing one’s creativity. It was also done to reveal dreams or tell stories. The meaning behind antique rugs is what makes them irreplaceable. And it is what makes them very popular in today’s market.

I represent a television production company called Screaming Flea Productions based in Seattle, WA, and we are creating a new show where we need a rug expert or consultant to evaluate two antique rugs. One rug is Persian, and the other is a Sarouk/Arak rug, and they are apparently both over a hundred years old.
We can correspond online only through e-mailing pictures of the rugs to a consultant, or if possible we would love to actually have someone come onto our show and look at the rugs in person. The episode is being filmed in Pennsylvania on January 9th-12th.
We need an estimate of the rugs’ worth, and help figuring out how/where to sell these rugs.
Thank you for your time.
